Ashman and Menken: Disney’s Renaissance Men

By ALBERT EVANS, Artistic and Education Associate

Fairy tales might seem like effortless magic—all you need is a storyteller and an audience—but bringing the magic to life on stage and screen requires the combined efforts of a small army of artists and craftspeople.

Look at the credits of a Disney animated classic like The Little Mermaid and you’ll see the names of hundreds of folks who labor, sometimes for years, to create all of the elements of a fantasy world.

Glenn Casale will be directing our holiday production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Though this is Glenn’s first time at The 5th, he has quite a history with The Little Mermaid. After the show was less successful than hoped on Broadway, Glenn got his hands on it and reinvented the show to bring you the version you’ll be seeing this holiday season. (Check out this HuffPo article about the process.)

Is this your first time working with The 5th?
This is my first time. However, I have been with the Peter Pan tour through Seattle a couple of times.

What has been your favorite directorial experience?
I think it has to be doing Beauty and the Beast in Paris. It is a French story and the first time it was produced professionally in France.

Why this show? What is intriguing or interesting about it to you?
I had the opportunity to rework The Little Mermaid four years ago at Paper Mill. The creators added new material and changed the book. Now it is not about a girl looking for a prince; now it is about a young woman who is different and wants to find out who she is.

Dream show to direct?
I would love to do Light in the Piazza.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I would love to live in Amsterdam. I love the people, atmosphere and lifestyle.

Join us “under the sea” this holiday season! Tickets for Disney’s The Little Mermaid are swimming away incredibly fast, so buy yours early so you don’t miss out. The show runs November 23-December 31, with a matinee recently added on Christmas Eve due to demand! Click here to find out more and to purchase tickets.
