Happy holidays from The 5th (and Producing Artistic Director Bill Berry) to you! Our favorite not-influencer (but totally an influencer) is back with another list of things he’s been totally obsessing over this month. Have YOU ever seen gingerbread houses as cute as the ones below? Let us know in the comments!
Decorating Holiday Treats
Bill has discussed baking before in this list (most recently: in November’s roundup he put out a call for amazing Yule Log recipes!). He is just as into decorating the treats he bakes as much as he loves baking them.
“Lately, I have been reading lots of books about how to decorate cookies and other treats. I am overwhelmed by how to decorate most of the things I make and typically give up as a result. This year I am determined to succeed!” (We think he has, see below!)
The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
“This book is an adventure-type story that has lots of magic. It’s super quirky and a really fun read.”
Grandmother’s Cuckoo Clock
“I am obsessed with my grandmother’s cuckoo clock, which my mom and I finally got to work the other day. At five minutes to the hour, I MUST go and stand right by it so I can see the bird pop out on the hour. My grandmother, who bought it in Germany in the 1960s, hung it in a spare bedroom so it wouldn’t disturb anyone late at night.”
Grapefruit (yes, the large citrus fruit)
“I wait all year for citrus season so I can eat the best grapefruit. I try all the varieties I possibly can and always keep an eye out for new ones when I’m grocery shopping. Mellow Gold is so good and juicy, I think it might be my new favorite. Here’s a tip: when you eat them, leave big hunks of the fruit in so you get all the juice at the end. I will seriously eat grapefruit every day until they are gone and am really looking forward to Ruby Reds.”
Cortina in Downtown Seattle
Cortina is an excellent restaurant just a block and a half away from The 5th and is therefore a perfect spot for a pre-show meal or a post-show drink!
“I resisted stopping into Cortina for awhile, but recently caved and it’s really, really good. I can’t get enough of the Tonnarelli Carbonara, which is basically pasta with a TON of cheese. There is also an amazing truffle pizza on the happy hour menu. After the third bite I knew I had to keep eating this pizza as many times as I possibly can, and even though you don’t get truffle in every bite, it’s okay. The balance is perfect.”
We’ll see you next month for the next round of Bill’s picks!
