You may have heard through the news or social media that on Sunday, December 2, we cancelled the 1:30 pm matinee due to a security threat. The safety of our guests, staff, and artists is our highest priority and we take all threats seriously. The Seattle Police Department was contacted; an investigation was conducted; and the suspect was quickly apprehended. The evening performance went forward as scheduled.
We consider all our guests a part of our 5th Avenue Theatre family and we want to be as transparent as possible, particularly should you have concerns about your upcoming performance of Annie.
First and foremost, we want to assure you this was an isolated incident and the threat has been contained.
Secondly, as a precaution, we are increasing security measures for the duration of the run, including hiring a private security firm.
Finally, we are taking the opportunity to refine our existing emergency response procedures, which are revisited prior to each performance by our outstanding guest services and front-of-house staff.
There is nothing like the magic of Downtown Seattle this time of year, and The 5th has been proud to be a part of that since the theater launched as a home for musical theater in 1980 with—what else—Annie. In this moment, more than ever, we need this story of joy, resilience, and the fervent belief that tomorrow can be better than today.
Thank you for your patronage, and, of course if you have questions, please contact Guest Services at 206.625.1900.
We’ll see you at the Theatre.
